I’m sorry I’ve been so silent lately, I’m behind on all my doll work and have been spending every bit of free time casting, molding, priming and sanding 3d prints and digitally sculpting trying to catch up (of course those who know me know I’m always behind on my doll work because I’m always trying something crazy Ive never done before) In particular I’ve been stressing out over Mira. Mira was my first fully digital sculpt and because of this I took full advantage of all the perks the new medium has to offer, when sculpting digitally and printing in nylon powder you can do amazing things like taper joints to a razor sharp edge to make them tighter and of course visually blend together, this is far easier than anything that can be done when working with brittle clay as nylon powder prints are slightly flexible and super durable.. However, I didn’t realize when sculpting this way that if a part tapers down to a sharp, super thin edge, creating a mold that aligns perfectly with virtually no shrinkage is a total necessity…
It took me a hell of a lot of experiments, eight months of extra hair pulling and wasting about 500 dollars in silicone,……but i finally got it!…… Oh and BTW her hair is cast out of a special flexible resin!, its soft and bendable like dense silicone but it can be painted like resin! Mira’s wig fits so precisely and she has those delicate wisps of hair hanging down that frame her face it demanded that i use something other than traditional, heavy, brittle resin. Ive experimented and played with this “soft” resin for years but shes the first time Ive ever used it on a finished doll.
If youd like to see more pics of her you can check out my post on Tumblr, donnkinney.tumblr.com/post/141…
Mira like all my dolls is 100% handmade by myself, Her sculpt was created entirely by myself, I made her silicone molds, cast her resin parts, finisehd and assembled them.
